Home Learning

Kismet Park Primary School believes that Home Learning plays an important role in the academic and personal development of students from Prep to Year 6. Home Learning provides opportunities for students to take responsibility for their own learning while reinforcing the foundations of the ‘You Can Do It’ program (Confidence, Persistence, Organisation, Getting Along and Emotional Resilience). It also provides an opportunity for parents, teachers and students to share the responsibility for learning and promotes the view that learning occurs beyond school and can be supported at home.

The purpose of Home Learning at Kismet Park Primary School is:

  • to enable students to reinforce what is learnt at school
  • to provide students with personal experiences that help them develop the positive attitudes and life skills (Confidence, Persistence, Organisation, Getting Along and Emotional Resilience) that are essential for success and happiness.
  • to foster good study habits
  • to provide students with a range of differentiated learning tasks
  • to provide an opportunity for students to be responsible for their own learning
  • to provide parents with opportunity to be involved in their child’s learning.

IMPLEMENTATION

Teachers will set weekly learning tasks that are suited to the age, ability and developmental needs of their students. Throughout the year, year levels will decide on the specific homework requirements for the students.

These requirements are then communicated with students and families.

Homework should not be too demanding, nor should it negatively impact upon the home/school balance.

In addition to regular Home Learning, families may choose to:

  • be a part of the Premier’s Reading Challenge as part of their home reading
  • provide online resources that students may choose to take advantage of.

FURTHER ONLINE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES - Mathletics and Reading Eggs

To strengthen connections between home and school learning during 2020 we are trialling two web-based learning programs: Mathletics and Reading Eggs. Through these programs students explore a game-like learning world where they work at their own academic level on a variety of mathematical topics and build reading and comprehension skills.  By providing access from home the programs support families in their efforts to be actively involved in their child’s learning.

The benefits include:

  • Students are engaged and motivated to learn through a game-like environment.
  • Mathletics is adaptive, responding to student’s individual strengths and weaknesses. Animated support guides students through concepts, acting like an online tutor.
  • Reading Eggs focuses on letter sounds, phonics skills, sight words, reading simple sentences and introductory comprehension skills.

Students access Mathletics and Reading Eggs through the use of a username and password. Families are able to purchase discounted annual subscriptions through the school. Payments can be made through COMPASS or at the office. Once payment is made your child will receive their log on details of username and password so they can begin accessing the program.
